Proven at Backstage for 1 Year+
Safe, staffed overnight coverage at a distance for boutique hotels of up to 40 rooms in the city centre. For a fixed monthly fee, without a night porter of your own. It protects your margin without sacrificing hospitality.
A night porter of your own quickly costs €50,000 to €81,000 per year, fully loaded, including employer costs, night allowances and cover for illness and holidays. And the roster still has to be filled: night shifts are the hardest shifts to staff in hospitality. For a boutique hotel of up to 40 rooms, that fixed cost is out of proportion to what actually happens at night. The easy fix is a screen in the lobby or an unmanned hotel. But that gives up the very thing a boutique hotel runs on: hospitality.
There are two ways to cut night costs. One puts your guest in front of a machine. The other keeps a real person behind it, just no longer on site.
Access via a key safe or smart lock. Late arrivals always get in.
Reachable all night via the app, the QR code in the room and the doorbell.
The night receptionist monitors your hotel’s public areas throughout the night.
Automatically to Securitas and the fire brigade.
In case of an alarm, Securitas is at the door. In case of fire, the fire brigade is dispatched at once.

We run hotels in Amsterdam ourselves. We are not a tech company selling you a screen. This approach was designed and tested at Backstage Hotel and has been proven in practice for 1 Year+, without incidents and with positive guest reviews. You are not buying a software subscription, you are adopting a working method from a fellow hotel.
Request more informationYes. Backstage runs on Mews, which gives the night reception direct access to up to date booking, guest and room information — but Mews is not a requirement.
We look at the right solution per hotel and per PMS, taking into account the technical setup, the available integrations and the hotel’s existing work processes.
We are always there. Trained back-up night receptionists can take over a shift at the last moment, with the same access to systems, guest information and emergency procedures.
The night reception stays fully staffed even in case of illness or unexpected absence — the service never depends on a single employee.
Always — by QR code, call or WhatsApp. Guests contact the team via a QR code in the room, and can choose to call or send a WhatsApp message.
Right now, 89% of all conversations are already handled by our AI agent. When human support is needed, the conversation is forwarded to the back office. The doorbell can also be linked remotely to the team.
We act immediately, following clear protocols. The night receptionist works with set procedures for every type of emergency.
In a medical emergency, 112 is called. In a suspicious situation or serious disturbance, the security company is called in. For lost keys, we first check whether the person is actually staying at the hotel, then the security company can assist the guest.
If a suspicious situation is seen on the camera footage, action is taken immediately according to the agreed protocol, set in advance with the hotel and the parties it works with.
Live, every night, all night. The night receptionist has access to the camera footage of the hotel’s public areas and checks it according to fixed agreements. A suspicious situation triggers immediate action per the agreed escalation protocol.
No suitable camera system yet? We look together at a solution tailored to the building, the risks and the hotel’s preferences.
Smoothly — guests always get in. Depending on the PMS used, late arrivals are handled with a mandatory online check-in, giving the guest what they need in advance to reach the hotel and room independently.
If the PMS does not offer this, we use a suitable protocol for late arrivals. For a lost key, we first check the guest’s identity and booking, then arrange help according to the agreed protocol.
Not much — and we set it up together. What is needed differs per hotel, so we like to visit in person to look at the current situation.
From there, we map out exactly which adjustments and agreements are needed for the hotel to start safely and smoothly.
Nothing stops. A 4G back-up kicks in if the fixed internet connection fails, and the key safe keeps working independently, so guests can still get access during an outage.
Fire and alarm response also runs via a certified monitoring centre, independent of the hotel’s internet connection — the most important safety provisions stay active even during an outage.
No — guests still talk to a real person, just at a distance. They can reach out at any time by phone or WhatsApp, and human support steps in whenever it is needed.
Backstage has run this setup for 1 Year+ now and still receives positive guest reviews: quick support when needed, without someone having to sit behind the desk all night.
